During the medieval period, the Islamic Maghreb witnessed the arrival of numerous ethnic groups at different times and for various reasons. This began with the Islamic conquests in the 1st century AH, followed by the armies that entered the region during the Umayyad and Abbasid periods throughout the 2nd century AH. These brought with them Arab leaders and their clients — Persians and others — some of whom settled in the Maghreb’s urban centers and intermingled with the local populations. The region also attracted merchants, missionaries, and scholars from various lands due to its favorable conditions for settlement. Among the peoples who arrived were Persians. Several factors facilitated the process of mixing among these different groups. One of the most significant was the policy adopted by the ruling powers across the Maghreb — particularly the policy of intermarriage practiced by princes, leaders, and sultans, known today as political marriage. A notable example of this phenomenon is found in the policies of the Rustamid imams, who were of Persian origin. Some of them married into powerful Berber tribes to strengthen their political standing and secure loyalty; others sought alliances with neighboring states by marrying the daughters of their rulers; and some intermarried with Arab notables to benefit from their influence and prestige. Such practices encouraged their followers — both commoners and Persian soldiers — to mix and assimilate, in accordance with the saying “people follow the religion of their rulers.” This socio-historical phenomenon ultimately led to the fusion of the Persian element into a new Maghrebi society — one that was ethnically diverse yet unified religion, language, and culture.
