This research addresses the issue of autonomous weapons systems in light of the United Nations Charter, in the context of the transformations imposed by the digital revolution on information and communication systems, and the resulting unprecedented developments in the military field. The research aims to analyse the extent to which the use of these systems is compatible with the principle of the prohibition of the use of force enshrined in the Charter, especially in the absence of direct human supervision. The researcher relies on an analytical-descriptive approach, combining a study of the technical characteristics of autonomous weapons (such as autonomy, learning, adaptation, and lethality) with an analysis of the international legal framework governing the use of force, focusing on the divergence in states' positions on the legality of these systems. The research concluded that these weapons pose a growing legal and ethical challenge, given the lack of international consensus on their legality and their potential to bypass controls on the use of force without human intervention. It also noted that the legitimate defence recognised in the case of conventional weapons remains controversial in the context of autonomous weapons, making the ban on them relative and unstable.
