One of the reasons of the progressive transformation of the British monarchy, from an absolute to a constitutional type, was the eroding action of royal charters. They were written permissions granted by the kings to exploit several areas of England’s management. Accordingly, the present article tries to reflect the impact of royal charters on the decline of English monarchical absolutism. It also tries to illustrate their prevalence throughout the different events that led to the proclamation of a constitutional nature of the British kingdom. The main findings reflect the paradoxical side of royal charters; they were initially considered as royal privileges and ended up significantly transforming an ancestral British institution.
