A Psychometric Study Of Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices: A Field Study Conducted On A Sample Of Fifth-year Pupils In Selected Primary Schools, Bordj Bou Arréridj

Authors : Haoues Hadjer .

Abstract

This study sought to verify the psychometric properties of Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM) among 193 fifth year primary pupils in Bordj Bou Arréridj, adopting a descriptive analytical design and employing several statistical methods—most notably Cronbach’s alpha, split half reliability, and a discriminant validity test between higher and lower groups. The results indicated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = .892) and robust split half reliability (.903 after Spearman–Brown correction), along with a pronounced discriminative capacity, as the upper group’s mean (31.20) significantly exceeded that of the lower group (15.90); moreover, the sample’s overall intelligence level surpassed the hypothetical mean, confirming that Raven’s CPM possesses sound psychometric properties in the Algerian primary setting and constitutes a well suited tool for the assessment of non verbal intelligence.
