Ai-assisted Writing: A Boon Or A Bane For Efl Students?

Authors : Boumaraf Amel .

Abstract

The increasing use of AI-assisted writing tools in EFL classrooms raises questions about their impact on students’ writing skills. This study explored the perceptions of forty EFL students and seven teachers at Abbes Laghrour University regarding AI’s benefits and challenges in academic writing. Findings revealed that students valued AI for improving grammar, vocabulary, and idea generation, but many struggled with over-reliance, reduced creativity, and plagiarism concerns. Teachers acknowledged AI’s potential but expressed worries about passive learning and detecting AI-generated work. The study emphasizes the need for AI literacy, clear policies, and a balanced approach where AI supports rather than replaces critical writing skills.
