One of the lengthiest discussions regarding the literary canon has to do with Stephen King and his ongoing oeuvre. Various opinions exist, suggesting at times that his corpus is nothing but harmless junk and at others insisting on the merits of his numerous masterpieces. Far from striving for another opinion to add to the pile, this article seeks a more objective answer to whether Art-horror is as valuable and significant as other genres in mainstream literature. With that end in mind, it concerns itself with the inner workings of Man's psyche - especially in the early stages of skill formation - the nature and quality of education, and how King's fiction bridges the gap between both and allows the reader to discover and generate solutions to significant problems. Beyond the entertaining aspects of such stories, this article uncovers the role they play in strengthening communication and family ties between junior and senior readers. It also investigates the cognitive training that such macabre adventures provide as a valuable complement to the formal training at school.
