Reception Theory has placed the reader at the center of the literary process, granting them a privileged status and handing them the keys to the text. Indeed, it has elevated the reader to a position of greater value than both the text and its author, as the acceptance or rejection of a text becomes contingent upon the reader’s judgments and interpretations. This is because the text is an open space for interpretation, allowing for multiple readings and diverse perspectives. Such an interest in the reader emerged as an inevitable response to the limitations of earlier approaches—both contextual and structural—which proved incapable of fully encompassing the text or rendering it accessible to the reader. These shortcomings created a cognitive gap between literary creation and its audience, and even led to a sense of disappointment, given the inability of those approaches to provide the enrichment the reader seeks. By nature, the reader aspires to seriousness and excellence in literary works and desires a rupture of their horizon of expectations in order to fully savor the text, engage with it, and take pleasure in its details. Thus, Reception and Reader-Response Theory—which places the reader at the heart of its concerns and the focal point of its analysis—emerged as an escape from the restrictive frameworks imposed by previous methodologies. The poem “The Boat… and the Waves” by the poet Abdelrahman Ben Sania stands as a model of contemporary poetry, distinguished by its refined structure and elevated meaning, making it particularly suitable for the application of this theory.
