This article deals with Amazigh language lexicons published during the colonial period, focusing on the types of lexicons produced as well as the institutions and actors behind them. These works represent some of the earliest attempts that contributed to the transition of the Amazigh language from an oral to a written form. These activities were accompanied, during that period, by numerous political, social, and cultural events that influenced Algeria in general and the Amazigh regions in particular. The research problem focuses on the types of lexicons selected at that time, between monolingual and bilingual works, as well as the themes chosen for recording terms and their meanings. This article is based on the hypothesis that the lexicons used during this period were mostly bilingual, due to the French colonial context, and in order to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture. The study is based on a set of lexicons written during the colonial period (1830–1962). The methodology consists of identifying lexicographic productions, analyzing their types, and attempting to determine the themes they address. The historical framework relies on scientific studies dealing with Amazigh vocabulary in general, and with the colonial period in Algeria in particular.
