Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of electronic fraud through social media platforms in Sudan from a sociological perspective, with particular emphasis on victims lived experiences and the broader implications of digital crime for Sudanese society. The study seeks to identify the most prevalent forms of online fraud, analyze the social and demographic characteristics of victims, and investigate the psychological, social, and economic consequences associated with digital victimization. It further evaluates the effectiveness of legal and institutional mechanisms designed to address cyber fraud and enhance digital security. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative techniques. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale, while qualitative insights were generated through semi-structured interviews with selected victims. The findings reveal that electronic fraud significantly undermines social trust and weakens interpersonal relations within digital environments. The results further indicate that cyber fraud produces varying psychological and economic effects on victims amid limited digital awareness and inadequate enforcement of cybercrime legislation. The study concludes that combating cyber fraud requires strengthening digital literacy programs, enhancing institutional and psychosocial support mechanisms for victims, and reforming legal and policy frameworks to respond more effectively to emerging digital crimes.
