The city of Biskra is considered one of the most important cities in the central Maghreb desert due to its unique geographical location as the gateway to the desert, forming a link between north and south and east and west. It also played a major role in stimulating economic activity in central Maghreb. This economic activity is highlighted by travelers and geographers who described the city of Biskra and its surroundings in their books. The agricultural sector enjoyed an abundance of various crops, including dates, olives, and other fruits, in addition to livestock such as camels and sheep. In the industrial sector, agricultural and animal products flourished, and domestic and foreign trade was very active, with a variety of commercial exchanges, especially in dates and salt. Biskra was considered one of the major markets in the Middle Ages, as it was characterized by an abundance of trade routes connecting the northern cities with the Sudan.
