Abstract: This paper applies critical discourse analysis to explore how the German far- right party AfD strategically employed the notions of “homeland” and “identity” in its 2017 federal election campaign. Drawing on election posters, the party manifesto and selected social-media content, the study demonstrates that both concepts were framed in ethnic, biologistic and highly emotional ways. They functioned as tools for constructing an exclusive national “we,” demarcating “others,” and legitimising anti-immigration policies. The analysis identifies key right-wing-populist discursive strategies, including emotionalisation, polarisation, and the argumentative topoi of threat, incompatibility and quantification.
