It At the dawn of the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire experienced expansion and annexed new territories in North Africa, such as Algeria, Tripoli, and Tunisia. However, by the end of that century, the Eyalet of Tripoli witnessed the emergence of movements opposing Ottoman rule and a number of revolts supported by the local population. These uprisings were seen as an opportunity to free themselves from the oppression and injustice of the Ottoman governors, who had burdened them with heavy taxes and levies. The people supported tribal leaders and Sufi sheikhs who rebelled against Ottoman presence in the region. Among these revolts was the movement led by Yahya bin Yahya al-Suwaidi (1587–1590), who rose up in the areas of Tripoli and Tajura against the abuses committed by the Ottoman soldiers, especially against pilgrims. His revolt expanded and gained support from rebels across the eyalet, nearly driving out the Ottoman presence in Tripoli. This situation prompted the Ottoman Sultan to send messages to all tribes and to mobilize a large army from various provinces to crush the revolt, accusing its leader of falsely claiming to be the Mahdi (the awaited savior in Islamic eschatology). So, does Yahya bin Yahya al-Suwaidi’s revolt stem from Mahdist motives, or is it part of the broader anti-Ottoman movements in the Eyalet of Tripoli?
