The Implicit Elements Of Satirical Discourse In Emile Habibi's Novel "the Pessoptimist" As A Model

Abstract: This study aims to explore the implicit meanings of satirical discourse in Emile Habibi’s novel “The Pessoptimist”, by analyzing satire as a narrative and semantic strategy that conceals behind its humorous surface a deep political and social critique. The research adopts an analytical approach based on discourse analysis, implicature, irony, and pragmatics, in order to examine how satire functions as a literary mask through which rejection and resistance are expressed under conditions of censorship and oppression. The study demonstrates that satire in the novel goes beyond mere entertainment or aesthetic pleasure, becoming a form of cultural resistance that exposes the realities of Israeli occupation, reveals its contradictions, and reflects the psychological and social suffering of Palestinians living within occupied territory. The character of Saeed, the “pessoptimist,” embodies a fragmented Palestinian self caught between adaptation and resistance, where laughter intersects with sorrow and optimism merges with pessimism. The study concludes that Habibi’s satirical discourse operates on a dual level: an explicit humorous layer and an implicit critical one, making satire a powerful tool for generating hidden meanings and an effective strategy for transcending direct and overt political narration in contemporary Palestinian literature.
