The Attention Economy And The Media Industry: From Audience Competition To Behavioral Investment

Authors : Noureddine Bensoula .

Abstract

This paper explores the structural transformations that have reshaped the economics of media in the digital era, highlighting the shift from material production to symbolic and attention-based production. It demonstrates how digital platforms have become the central economic actors that manage human attention and convert it into financial value through algorithms and targeted advertising. The study discusses key related concepts such as the digital economy, platform economy, data economy, and attention economy, emphasizing how these frameworks collectively redefine the relationship between audiences, media, and capital. Findings indicate that attention has become the scarcest resource in the contemporary media environment, and controlling it constitutes the core of economic and communicative competition. Furthermore, the paper outlines the ethical and professional challenges facing journalism, as well as the broader cultural and social consequences of this paradigm shift. Ultimately, the study concludes that the attention economy represents not only an economic model but also a cultural and epistemic system that has redefined the very function of media from informing to monetizing human behavior and time.
