This narrative literature review explores how technological affordances, algorithmic curation, and participatory culture jointly shape audience attention on short-video platforms (TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts). Grounded in Gibson’s ecological theory of affordances, Hutchby’s socio-technical extension, and Jenkins’ concept of participatory culture, the study synthesizes 49 key scholarly works published between 2015–2025. Findings reveal that technological affordances and algorithmic curation function as primary mechanisms for capturing and sustaining attention. However, these dynamics reinforce ideological echo chambers, filter bubbles, attentional fragmentation, and unequal visibility. Furthermore, It illustrates how platform design architecture and algorithmic logic compel users to adjust their behaviors to successfully fit within the system The review identifies persistent gaps in non-Western contexts, longitudinal cognitive effects, and algorithmic transparency. It calls for an ethical platform redesign oriented toward societal well-being rather than purely commercial engagement metrics.
