The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) writing assistants has markedly influenced second language (L2) academic writings, providing support in areas such as grammar, vocabulary, and coherence. While prior studies (e.g., Stapleton & Kin, 2019 ; Koltovskaia, 2020) have demonstrated that AI tools contribute to reducing surface-level errors, their impact on enhancing higher-order writing skills, such as argument development and critical thinking, remains a topic of ongoing debate. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of AI writing assistants in improving L2 academic writing by analysing their effects on linguistic accuracy, structural coherence, and overall writing proficiency. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, involving a pre-test and post-test design that assessed the writing performance of L2 learners after AI-assisted revisions. The findings advocate for a balanced approach to AI integration, which combines automated feedback with structured writing instruction to cultivate independent L2 writing competence.
