During the imperial period, the role of provincial governor formed an essential pillar ensuring the stability of the Roman legal system within the provinces. Strengthening the governors’ prerogatives, encompassing administrative, financial, military, and judicial domains, posed a major challenge in terms of their ability to fully exercise these responsibilities and organize their effective implementation. In this article, we focus on the question of the governor’s judicial responsibilities, namely his competencies, power, and role in the proper management of justice at the local level. His duties include those toward local communities, particularly after Caracalla’s citizenship edict, and the integration of local elites into the Roman system. We also highlight, among other things, the centralized control mechanisms of imperial authority over these governors aimed at preventing and combating violations and corruption at the local level, to demonstrate ultimately that the credibility of Roman law and territorial integrity rest on his sound justice.
