This study aimed to examine the evolution of theorizing in the field of civil-military relations, which also represents an explanatory factor closely linked to democracy in terms of its existence, stability, and sustainability. Ultimately, it became clear that a shift has occurred in the research agenda, moving from a focus on civilian control to prevent coups, and the requirements of professionalism and military respect of its area of expertise and effective performance, to an interest in security sector reform within a broader approach. This approach emphasizes professionalism and effectiveness on the one hand, while incorporating dimensions related to development, community security, and governance on the other. This shift emerged within the research on consolidating new democracies. The Arab uprisings, in particular, introduced a new area of inquiry concerning the military role in the transition to democracy phase.
