The integration of artificial intelligence in higher education has raised a controversial debate between advocates and opponents. This research seeks to investigate teachers’ views on artificial intelligence role in English language education. It explores their perceptions and experiences regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching practices. A qualitative method was adopted, using semi-structured interviews with eight teachers at three English Departments. Data were analysed through an inductive thematic analysis. Findings indicated that teachers had positive perceptions and experiences towards artificial intelligence adoption as a useful supplementary tool that should not replace teachers. They emphasised important benefits for teachers and students, but they reported certain challenges and concerns. Thus, they underscored the importance of professional training and the necessity of considering ethical standards to integrate artificial intelligence properly and responsibly. These results offer beneficial implications for teachers, researchers, and policy makers to effectively integrate artificial intelligence in English language education.
