Scholars constituted a central pillar in the political structure, as rulers derived religious legitimacy from their authority. Consequently, many scholars and jurists sought proximity to power for both public and personal purposes, adopting various strategies, most notably panegyric praise. Through this practice, a number of scholars attained prestigious positions such as the vizierate, the imamate, and the office of the khuṭba, in addition to acquiring material benefits. In some cases, panegyric also enabled scholars to curb corruption and influence rulers’ policies in favor of the common good. This phenomenon was not novel, but rather deeply rooted in earlier societies, and it took two main literary forms: poetry and prose. Al-Maghrib al-Aqṣā became particularly renowned for this genre during the ʿAlawite period, when an elite group of scholars enriched Moroccan scholarship with works praising the dynasty’s genealogy and achievements. These included diverse poetic compositions presented to rulers in pursuit of favor and recognition.
