From The Archival Document To The Historical Event: An Interdisciplinary Approach Linking The Preservation Of National Memory, Knowledge Integration, And Tourism Attraction

Authors : Merdjaa Aicha .

Abstract

This paper explores how regional archive institutions help shape historical events and sustain Algeria’s national collective memory. The wide distribution and diversity of archival repositories documenting Algeria’s history during the French occupation have encouraged scholars in Algeria and abroad to engage more directly with this collective memory, leading to intensified fieldwork and closer collaboration with Algerian researchers. This work seeks to generate scholarship that constitutes an academic contribution while also providing a space to share research experience and disseminate historical facts. To this end, the paper examines an example drawn from the activities of the Mosque of Algiers (Djamaâ El-Djazaïr), which has positioned national memory as a point of convergence between communication studies, history, documentation, archival studies, and ethnography, while also supporting regional attraction by promoting heritage and marketing tourist landmarks
