Linguistic Choices In Documentary Films: Potential For Investigation For Language Didactics

Abstract
This article examines the potential of documentary films as a corpus and/or investigation tool in language didactics, questioning the authenticity of language choices and methodological challenges of exploiting these multimodal media. Based on the role of the documentary as a tool for investigation and on the complexity of the Algerian linguistic landscape, the study combined a diachronic analysis of films and interviews with teacher-researchers. The results revealed an evolution of linguistic dynamics (from colonial French to contemporary hybridization) and a duality of use by researchers (research corpus vs. educational support). This study asserts that documentary films are complex mirrors of the linguistic landscape.
