The study explores the potential of integrating solar-powered desalination into Algeria's Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus as a solution to growing challenges of water scarcity and food insecurity. It aims to evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental performance of solar-powered systems compared to conventional gas-based desalination. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporates a literature review, analysis of datasets from FAO and IEA, and scenario modeling. The findings highlight Algeria’s significant solar energy potential, ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 kWh/m² annually, showcasing its capacity to significantly lower desalination energy costs and carbon emissions. Utilizing desalinated water for targeted irrigation improves agricultural resilience and mitigates drought risks. While environmental assessments affirm reduced emissions, they also bring attention to the challenge of brine disposal as a major concern. Additionally, governance analysis underscores that fragmented policies hinder seamless integration of such systems. Ultimately, combining solar energy with desalination emerges as a viable strategy to bolster water security, enhance food production, and promote sustainable resource management across Algeria.
