Abstract: This study examines Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel The Sympathizer, focusing on its biracial protagonist as an embodiment of a hyphenated existence. The analysis argues this hyphen is a defining condition of his fractured identity, destabilizing binary oppositions and fostering a unique critical perspective on both Eastern and Western cultures. By navigating this liminal space, the protagonist's hybrid position enables a critique of race and nationalism, but ultimately hinders genuine belonging. The study uses textual analysis to demonstrate how this position, forged in the Vietnam War and exile, becomes an inescapable wound, leading to tragic self-fragmentation. The novel thus serves as a powerful commentary on cultural identity, critically intervening in discourses on representation.
