Assessing The Quality Of Accounting Information Under Ifrs 9: A Comparative Panel-ardl Analysis Of Islamic And Conventional Banks Listed On The Damascus Securities Exchange

Authors : Dawood Samia .

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of accounting information (AIQ) under IFRS 9 implementation, using a comparative analysis of annual financial reports from Islamic Banks (IBs) and Conventional Banks (CBs) listed on the Damascus Stock Exchange between 2012–2023. AIQ is assessed via the discretionary loan loss provisions (DLLP) approach within the loan loss provisions (LLP) model, employing EViews 13 for panel data analysis. Findings reveal a persistent long-term strategic use of DLLP for earnings management (EM), with IBs exhibiting a more pronounced response. Despite IFRS 9 adoption, the earnings–DLLP relationship remains intact in CBs, while it weakens in IBs —except among high-performing entities—suggesting that EM persists conditionally on profitability. This signals a decline in AIQ and underscores the adaptive nature of IFRS 9, which appears shaped by institutional context rather than .
