Abstract:This research examines the role of the Hajj pilgrimage in strengthening relations among the Islamic kingdoms of the African continent during the Middle Ages. The study demonstrates that the Hajj served as an effective instrument for building bridges of understanding and cooperation among the Muslim peoples of Africa, as it represents a comprehensive civilizational phenomenon that encompasses multiple dimensions—religious, cultural, political, and economic. Bytracing the forms of civilizational interaction among African kingdoms, the study reveals the extent to which communication was enhanced through the exchange of ideas, the spread of jurisprudential schools, and the emphasis on Islamic identity and civilizational belonging. These elements played a vital role in reinforcing religious and cultural unity within the hearts of the peoples of the African continent. The research also investigates the interaction among scholars, merchants, and pilgrims alike. It employs a historical-analytical methodology based on medieval Islamic sources and the accounts of Muslim travelers and geographers who documented African pilgrimage journeys. Their writings relied primarily on direct eyewitness observation as the foundation of documentation, as well as on the testimonies of judges and preachers whom the pilgrims met in Egypt during their passage to the Hijaz.
