The Image Of Algeria In The Travel Literature Of The Swiss Isabelle Eberhardt

Abstract
This article explores the image of Algeria in Western travel literature through the writings of Isabelle Eberhardt. It examines her impressions of the Algerian people, the Sahara, and local customs, highlighting how her portrayal differs from that of many Western travelers who often depicted Algeria in a stereotypical or inferior manner. The study emphasizes the value of travel literature as a tool for understanding the Other and transmitting cultural knowledge, and it underscores the literary and historical significance of Eberhardt’s texts within Western travel writing. The research adopts the historical method to trace the development of travel literature among Arabs and Westerners, and uses imagology as a theoretical framework. A descriptive and analytical approach is applied to identify the features of the image Eberhardt constructed of Algeria. Findings show that Eberhardt offered a notably positive and nuanced representation, blending careful observation with narrative description and personal insight. يتناول هذا المقال دراسة صورة الجزائر في أدب الرحلة الغربية من خلال كتابات إيزابيلا إيرهارت، مع التركيز على الانطباعات التي نقلتها عن الشعب الجزائري والصحراء وعاداته وتقاليده. يهدف البحث إلى فهم كيفية تصوير إيزابيلا للجزائر مقارنة بالرحالة الغربيين الآخرين الذين غالبًا ما قدموا صورة دونية، وتسليط الضوء على دور أدب الرحلة كأداة معرفية لفهم الآخر ونقل الثقافات، مع إبراز القيمة الأدبية والتاريخية لنصوص إيزابيلا في إثراء المكتبة الرحلية الغربية. اعتمد البحث على المنهج التاريخي عند تتبع نشأة أدب الرحلة وتطوره عند العرب والغربيين، وعلى دراسة الصورولوجيا لتوفير إطار نظري للتحليل. كما استخدم المنهج الوصفي والتحليلي لدراسة نصوص إيزابيلا واستجلاء ملامح الصورة التي رسمتها للجزائر وأسلوبها في وصف الأماكن والشعب والعادات والتقاليد. أظهرت نتائج البحث أن إيزابيلا إيرهارت قدمت صورة إيجابية للجزائر وشعبها، مغايرة لصورة الرحالة الغربيين الآخرين، حيث جمعت بين الملاحظة الدقيقة والوصف السردي والانطباعات الشخصية، ما يجعل كتاباتها مرجعًا مهمًا لدراسة الرحلات الغربية وفهم الثقافة الجزائرية.
