Résumé

The merit of the first inventory belongs to Mr. Gaston Vulpilliéres, who, starting in September 1921, consolidated the entire collection in his “house-museum.” This collection comprises architectural fragments, reliefs, and inscriptions, as well as a sculptural assemblage including statues and heads. Today, a reassessment of this production is necessary in order to redefine the artistic dimension of works long relegated to what was termed “naïve” or mediocre art, as many early twentieth-century authors used to claim, or, at best, art of foreign influence. This modest study aims to approach the style, namely an analysis of the form and artistic style of four ancient heads discovered at El Kantara (Calceus Herculis). It also, and above all, seeks to understand how artistic and iconographic patterns are transmitted and evolve, leading to works that were long considered barbaric.
