Abstract

The early seeds of American identity have begun to germinate with the advent of a religious-cultural group called the Puritans who determined this identity. This paper aims to explore the construction of this identity. We demonstrate the distinctiveness of American identity through a historical process that unfolds itself in several stages. We advance the thesis that American identity reveals several natures, and that American identity has an ethnic foundation. Each nature of this identity characterizes an era in American history. Through the examination of some historical facts, this paper attempts at answering the questions: What are the historical origins of American identity? What is or are the nature(s) of these origins? The approach advocated is a pragmatic qualitative-analytical approach of historical facts, which contributed to its construction. The conclusions of the study are as follows: first, the nature of American identity is multifaceted and each nature characterizes a definite era in American history; second, American identity is founded on ethnicity.
