Repression And Reclaiming Of Female Voices Of War History Through Adania Shibli’s Minor Details

Authors : Saha Dola .

Abstract

This paper analyses Adania Shibli’s Minor Detail (2017) from an interdisciplinary perspective, addressing the silencing of female voices in Palestinian history. The novel recounts the forgotten history of the Nakba, buried under dominating historical narratives. The paper intends to reflect on how female bodies get weaponised during a war, to address which socio-cultural issues facilitate the aggression against female bodies and voices. Drawing from the idea of double marginalisation of Gayatri Chakravarti Spivak, the paper looks into the social foregrounds against women. Furthermore, Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s theory of historical silencing and Dubravka Zarkov’s take on legalising the weaponisation of women’s bodies in the form of rape and murder provide the article's direction for further analysis. Overall, the paper aims to highlight how, in the novel Minor Detail, the author challenged selective historiography, and is associated with the reclaiming of female voice and agency, and the importance of oral history within the collective memory of Palestine.
