In 297 A.D., the Roman Emperor Maximian launched a military campaign against the African provinces, with the aim of putting an end to the unrest led by certain local tribes, chiefly the Quinquegentanei. Literary sources, along with epigraphic and numismatic evidence, allow us to identify and interpret these events, as well as to highlight the military role played by Maximian in confronting them. However, these sources focus primarily on the political dimension of the campaign, which had been planned by Emperor Diocletian. From this perspective, the present study seeks to shed light on the nature of this campaign, its course, and its consequences for the African provinces, relying on a set of significant sources. It adopts an analytical approach that aims to explain how these local uprisings were ideologically employed to consolidate the legitimacy of the Tetrarchic system through a series of military and architectural projects.
