Until the 7th century AD, both the Levant and Egypt were subject to the Christian Byzantine Empire. However, this situation changed in the middle of the 7th century AD/1st century AH, as they came under the rule of Islam after being conquered militarily. Their rule continued under the authority of Islam, which the Christians were not satisfied with, and they kept waiting for opportunities to return to them and expel the Muslims from them, until the opportunity presented itself to them at the end of the 5th century AH/11th century AD. They sent several military campaigns within the framework of what is known as the Crusades, through which they were able to control most of the Levant and threatened Egypt with several military campaigns to annex it as well to their kingdom. In this article entitled: The Crusades against Egypt during the reign of King Amoury I (558-565 AH/1163-1169 AD), “A model of the civilizational conflict between Christianity and Islam,” we attempt to present an overview of the most important Crusades against Egypt before and during the reign of the Crusader King of Jerusalem, Amoury I. These campaigns witnessed a remarkable development during his reign, as a result of the deteriorating conditions within Egypt, with the aim of controlling it and returning it to Christianity. However, all these campaigns failed in the face of the insistence of the Fatimid authority, supported by the forces of Nur al-Din Mahmud, on rejecting the Crusader presence in their land.
