The religious dimension represents a fundamental pillar in the formation of national identity and social cohesion. In the Algerian context, religion preserved historical consciousness and reinforced unity during periods of resistance against colonial domination. Algerians drew upon their local capacities and spiritual institutions, notably the zawiyas and marabouts, who mobilized both human and material resources in defense of the homeland. This study investigates the enduring relationship between religion and popular resistance, illustrating how spiritual values sustained and legitimized anti-colonial movements. It further underscores the historical alliance between religious leadership and resistance figures, demonstrating that religion constituted not merely a system of belief, but a dynamic and cohesive force in shaping Algeria’s modern national identity.
