This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the health insurance system in Cameroon, focusing on its institutional framework, socio-economic impacts, and future development prospects. It highlights the progress made toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the persistent challenges, including low coverage (less than 10% of the population), institutional fragmentation, and overreliance on out-of-pocket health expenditures. The study shows that health insurance serves as a key mechanism for social protection and economic stability, reducing households’ financial vulnerability and improving productivity. However, its effectiveness remains constrained by weak governance, insufficient public funding, and low insurance literacy. Achieving sustainable UHC in Cameroon requires a structural reform based on national solidarity, inclusion of the informal sector, digitalization of community health schemes, and a unified legal framework. Health insurance thus emerges as a strategic instrument for sustainable development, ensuring every citizen’s fundamental right to health.
