Abstract: French writer Jean Genet was known for his life of vagrancy and banditry. Before his literary fame, he wrote his best-selling books while in prison, thus intersecting with the Italian thinker Antonio Gramsci, author of the Prison Notebooks. Jean Genet's unconditional support for just causes extended beyond moral support to material aid, as he distributed all of his wealth, which he had amassed after becoming a prominent writer. Against this background, we can explain Jean Genet's radical political leanings, which led him to ally with the Black Panthers against racism in the United States and the persecution of certain minorities through religious extremism and political violence; with the Algerians in their revolution against the French occupation; and with the Palestinians in their uprisings against the Zionist entity.
