In English language teaching, the communicative approach can be regarded as the most dominant and experienced method in foreign language teaching in many current ELT applications, and it has been widely used in the Algerian universities as well as in the university of Ahmed Zabana- Relizane which is considered as the leading method in the department of foreign languages (English and French). The origins of C.A can be found in a tradition of teaching the British language that dates back to the late 1960S. Scholars such as Christopher Cardlin and Hary Widdowson relied on John firth and Halliday’s British functional linguistics and Dell Hayme’s work in socio-linguistics, they claimed that the focus must be on the communicative proficiency rather than the mastery of structures only ( grammar, pronunciation ...etc ) in order to achieve a successful foreign language learning. The communicative approach also called the functional approach or communicative language teaching refers to the set of principles that includes recommendations about a specific syllabus shifting from the focus on the mastery of language to the use of this mastery to achieve effective communications. In addition, the functional syllabus replaces the structural one because fluency is the main objective of the C. A rather than accuracy that is why throughout more than 20 years, the Communicative approach is the most effective method to achieve this objective.
