Islamic Sufism represents a profound spiritual and ethical tributary within the Islamic heritage, presenting a unique existential vision based on divine oneness (tawhid) and the Oneness of Being (waḥdat al-wujūd). This vision reframes the relationship between God, humanity, and nature within a framework of integration and sacredness. In light of the contemporary environmental crisis that threatens the natural balance of life, there is a growing need for alternative intellectual and religious models capable of addressing these challenges at their root. Sufism, with its emphasis on the sanctity of the natural world as a manifestation of the Divine (tajallī), and its focus on ethics grounded in compassion and balance, offers a potential framework for an alternative paradigm that can contribute to addressing environmental challenges. This raises the following central question: Can Islamic Sufism, through its conceptualizations of Oneness of Being, divine unity, and spiritual ethics, effectively contribute to addressing the contemporary environmental crisis—especially given that this crisis differs fundamentally from the historical contexts in which classical Sufism emerged? Moreover, what pathways can be devised to reformulate and renew the Sufistic framework, thereby redirecting its spiritual and ethical energies toward the desired socio-ecological transformation? This study posits that Islamic Sufism encompasses a profound environmental vision rooted in concepts such as Oneness of Being and divine manifestation. It explores the potential of leveraging this vision—through contemporary reinterpretation—to establish an environmental ethics derived from Sufi texts, provided it transitions from individual spirituality to communal engagement and fosters a dialogue with modern environmental philosophies and scientific frameworks.
