Public Space Redevelopment Policies In Algeria: When Local Implementation Makes The Difference

Abstract

In Algeria, a public space improvement strategy in ZHUNs, launched in 2000, aimed to revitalize degraded urban fabrics. This study, based on field surveys, evaluates the capacity of local administrations to implement the necessary tools to achieve this goal. The results show that while some areas experienced successful requalification, the quality of interventions varies significantly across territories. This disparity highlights the importance of tailoring local strategies to the specific needs of each neighborhood to ensure the sustainable improvement of public spaces.
