Authors : Belgrimet Souad . Abdelhai Nour El Houda .

Abstract

The assessment of dictionaries has received ample attention in the last couple of decades. Accordingly, the study at hand seeks to throw light on the assessment of a specialized dictionary, namely, an economics dictionary entitled: “A Dictionary of Economics, Business and Finance” by Nabih Ghattas. In fact, the review of this dictionary was couched within McMillan’s framework (Landau, 1989). The study similarly attempts to capture the perceptions of Economics students at Jordan University regarding the effectiveness of dictionaries. This was realized by means of a mixed questionnaire. The yielded results revealed that the sampled dictionary mainly provides the semantic meaning with neglect of word formation, phonetic transcription and the etymology of the entry. Besides, students’ responses to the questionnaire indicated their satisfaction with the language used to account for each entry. The students’ responses similarly showed that they are not trained on how to make full use of dictionaries.
