Islamic al-Andalus was one of the most important civilizational bridges during the medieval period through which culture, science, and the arts were transmitted to Europe and the world. It also became famous as a field characterized by ethnic diversity and a remarkable place for religious tolerance. All of this granted the Dhimmis and various ethnic minorities Andalusian citizenship, allowing them to live under successive Islamic caliphates with their rights secured and their dignity safeguarded. Many among them enjoyed privilege and favor from the authorities and contributed directly to the political events of their age. Foremost among these minorities were the Jews, whose political and diplomatic activity flourished to its greatest extent during the 4th–5th centuries AH (10th–11th centuries CE). This very interaction and civilizational activity within al-Andalus and with Western Europe constitutes the central theme of this study.
