الملخص باللغة الأجنبية : The contemporary Palestinian novel constitutes a rich narrative space for the reconfiguration of the self in the face of oppression, where aesthetic structures intersect with cultural, political, and social contexts. Within this framework, A Mask the Color of the Sky by Basim Khandaqji stands out as a distinctive narrative model—written from within the lived experience of imprisonment and charged with a deep existential consciousness concerning questions of identity and the dilemma of freedom under the weight of occupation and constraint. Basim Khandaqji’s A Mask the Color of the Sky, authored by a Palestinian writer and prisoner, is a literary work that explores the themes of identity and transformation through a highly symbolic and poetic mode of expression, shaped by the contexts of occupation, incarceration, and resistance. Through its characters and narrative details, the novel reflects both internal and external struggles related to the self, the other, and the notion of belonging. The novel offers a philosophical and lyrical vision of identity—not as a fixed or inherent entity, but as an evolving project forged through resistance, suffering, and the act of writing. Transformation, in this narrative, is not presented as collapse or defeat, but as a rebirth of the self through pain, literary creation, and a steadfast belonging to Palestine, which remains the “sky” that grants ultimate meaning to identity. Through its intricate narrative structure and fragmented characters, the novel articulates a central problematic: the construction of individual and collective identity within a coercive authoritarian space. Within this context, the body, language, and imagination are transformed into instruments of resistance, operating amid a fraught existential condition. The novel conceptualizes captivity not merely as a material or physical state, but as a pervasive cultural system that infiltrates consciousness and memory, producing symbolic frameworks that perpetuate alienation. In response, the narrative deploys deconstructive and interrogative strategies that challenge and unsettle these structures of domination.
