Abstract

This study’s main aim is to investigate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT, on enhancing survival skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) secondary school students at Arab Messoud Secondary School in Khenchela. Recognizing the transformative potential of AI in education, the research addresses gaps in understanding teachers' attitudes toward AI integration and its role in developing critical 21st-century competencies such as communication, creativity, digital fluency, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Grounded in established learning theories like constructivism and deliberate practice, the study employed a quantitative experimental design with 120 students divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group received structured training on ChatGPT use over eight weeks, while the control group followed the standard curriculum. Results from Z-tests revealed statistically significant improvements in all measured soft skills for the experimental group compared to controls, demonstrating AI's effectiveness in fostering essential survival skills in EFL contexts. The findings underscore the importance of teacher involvement and training for successful AI adoption and recommend integrating AI tools into curricula to prepare students for an AI-driven world. The study concludes that AI-enhanced instruction enriches learning experiences and equips learners with versatile skills necessary for academic and real-world success, advocating for further research on longitudinal effects and diverse educational settings.
