The adoption of new language policies in Algeria boosted the linguistic pride of many Tamazight speakers and generated opposing views and negative reactions from some other speakers in daily social encounters and digital communities. This research examines responses to posts on Tamazight and its varieties in a corpus of Facebook comments and illustrates the explicit and implicit perceptions held by Algerian speakers, who vary on sociocultural grounds, about Tamazight. The analysis of the commentary practices revealed that users employ three main strategies to index their negative attitudes towards Tamazight and distance from its speakers: eye dialectal performances, implicit and explicit hate speech. Analyzing users-generated content adds to the growing body of research on sociolinguistic variation in social media (Cutler, 2020)1 by focusing on internet users’ experiences with heritage languages and shows the role of social media in the diffusion of linguistic ideologies.
