Authors : Zouyene Sadek .

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the role of governance in improving environmental performance, with a particular focus on the Municipality of Skikda. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, with data collected through a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 63 employees of the municipality, determined using Richard Geiger’s formula. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. The results revealed a strong positive relationship between the application of the principles of participation, responsibility, and accountability, and the improvement of environmental performance in the Municipality of Skikda, with these principles having the greatest impact. Other governance dimensions (transparency, justice, effectiveness, and efficiency) also showed varying positive effects. Based on these findings, the study recommends intensifying efforts to activate genuine community participation mechanisms and reinforce the principles of responsibility and accountability, given their ability to bring about positive transformations in environmental performance and achieve effective local governance.
