At the beginning of Roman colonial expansion in North Africa, the Romans sought to spread their culture in the cities they occupied by attracting and winning over the local populations to adopt their way of life peacefully, under the concept of Romanization. They established cities based on Roman architectural models and built all the facilities related to daily practical and recreational life. The cities of the Roman provinces, including Timgad in the province of Numidia, included all social categories regardless of their legal status (statut juridique), whether they were Roman citizens (citoyens romains), settlers (colons), or indigenous populations with a mobile status (indigènes au statut pérégrin). Donations (evergetism) played a central role in the construction of entertainment facilities and the organization of games in Timgad during the Roman Empire era. These practices were part of the city’s social and religious culture, as the wealthy and local elites funded games and religious events to gain political status and popular support. This was clearly demonstrated by “Paul Veyne” in his book Le Pain et le Cirque (1976), which is considered a key reference in the study of the donation system (evergetism), along with Latin inscriptions, which remain a primary source for studying these practices.
