This article explores how religion shapes identity formation by using a postcolonial lens to examine the experiences of Stephen in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Younes in Ce que le jour doit a la nuit (2008). Younes struggles with his hybrid identity, trying to balance Algerian and French cultures while adjusting to their different religious beliefs, while Stephen tries to break free from Catholicism. These contrasts illustrate the different ways that religion shapes identity in postcolonial contexts. The study analyzes the ways that religious influences shape the identity journeys of these two protagonists.
