Abstract

The Beylik of the East in general, and the city of Constantine in particular, experienced significant development. This city was distinguished by the presence of numerous scholars and jurists who were known for their intellectual contributions and religious writings. They also played an important role in political and cultural life, and contributed actively to the scientific sphere through their involvement in supervising education and the judiciary, especially since Constantine shone with its schools and mosques that nourished society both spiritually and intellectually. The city was also known for its affluent families who became renowned for their scholarship, authorship, teaching, asceticism, and Sufism. Among these families were the ‘Abd al-Mu’min family and the Ibn al-Fakkon family. Given the significant role played by the Ibn al-Fakkon family in altering the course of events in Constantine, we chose to examine the role of the city’s scholars in scientific and cultural life through the manuscript Nawāzil Ibn al-Fakkon, which includes fatwas issued by many of Constantine’s scholars. Our focus was on identifying this role by conducting an analytical study of selected legal cases from the manuscript, along with providing biographies of these scholars and an overview of their scholarly works.
