This article argues that Germany’s post–World War II behaviour can be better understood by examining the transformations in German national identity. It contends that positivist theories alone—particularly those that reduce the determinants of state behaviour to material factors, such as neorealism—are insufficient for a comprehensive explanation. Instead, the article highlights the role of ideational factors, as emphasized by social constructivism theory in international relations. The paper is structured into two main parts: the first outlines the core assumptions of constructivism, while the second tests the explanatory capacity of these assumptions through an analysis of key historical milestones in postwar Germany’s behaviour. The article concludes by reflecting on the limitations of social constructivism in accounting for state behaviour.
