Silence, often seen as the absence of sound, emerges as a powerful presence in modern horror cinema. This article examines its role as a narrative, psychological, and symbolic device in Hush (2016) and A Quiet Place (2018). Through a phenomenological reading of Hush and a semiotic analysis of both films’ posters, the study explores how silence is embodied, manipulated, and weaponized to evoke fear. The findings reveal that silence is active rather than passive: it unsettles, isolates, and amplifies dread. By analyzing cinematic language and visual rhetoric, the article shows how silence transforms into a central agent of horror.
