This study aims to compare teacher-feedback to ChatGPT-generated feedback in reviewing paragraph writing of English as a foreign language (EFL) students in the Department of foreign languages at the university of Skikda. A descriptive analytical method falling under a qualitative research design is opted. A document analysis is used to compare the two feedback modes provided on first- year EFL students’ productions across paragraph structure, coherence and unity, grammar and mechanics aspects. In most paragraphs, findings reveal that teachers follow explicit, error by error correction, with highly adherence to paragraph writing conventions. In contrast, Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) feedback tends to be summative, empathetic and supportive, yet lacks the ability to diagnose context-specific errors in paragraph form and content quality.
